Outcomes From Student Engagement in Collaborative Brainstorming

The University of Australia sought to transition from a traditional 'sage on the stage' teaching model to a more collaborative, student-centric approach to deepen learning in its architecture program. The challenge was to increase active student contributions and engagement, moving away from the educator solely defining key concepts to having students co-create content, particularly after site visits.

Using the GroupMap online brainstorming platform, educator Sophie Giles implemented collaborative mind maps where students could contribute ideas, images, and files. This solution allowed students to asynchronously build a rich repository of knowledge together. GroupMap enabled over 88% of approximately 300 students to actively contribute over a three-year period, increasing the depth of content by 5 to 10 times compared to the previous method and significantly improving knowledge retention and student investment in their learning.
