Toyota launches AR accessory sales tool with Groove Jones, targeting a billion-dollar parts market

Groove Jones partnered with Toyota Motor North America to address a challenge in the billion-dollar parts and accessories market. Toyota's dealerships lacked effective point-of-purchase materials, often not having brochures or examples of available accessories, which was influencing customer buying decisions. The customer's hypothesis was that an augmented reality tool could improve this experience and capture the business opportunity.

The solution implemented by Groove Jones was the Toyota Accessories Augmented Reality (TAAR) App. This application used machine learning to identify a vehicle model and then leveraged Apple's ARkit to visually attach photorealistic 3D accessories onto the physical truck without markers. The prototype app was successfully tested at multiple dealerships. As a result, Groove Jones helped Toyota realize more accessory sales and prevent revenue loss to third-party vendors, with the success leading to a joint patent submission.
