Hempel, a Denmark-based industrial paint manufacturer established in 1915, faced the challenge of designing a wireless monitoring device that could safely operate in explosive atmospheres during painting processes. The product, Hempel Track, required ATEX Zone 0 certification to be used in these hazardous environments. The vendor, GRINN, was tasked with developing this solution to ensure precise quality control.

GRINN delivered by developing the Hempel Track's hardware and embedded software, incorporating wireless LoRaWAN connectivity and a long-life battery. The resulting device monitors temperature and humidity and uses a shake-to-activate feature to signal the optimal time for recoating, eliminating manual time tracking. This ensured all painting was done under ideal conditions for major assets like ships and wind blades. GRINN's solution successfully met the stringent safety certification requirements for operation in explosive atmospheres.
