Puget Sound Energy exceeds TOU enrollment targets by 200% with GridX

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) faced the challenge of meeting growing energy demand in Western Washington amidst decreasing hydropower outputs and regulatory requirements from the Washington State Clean Energy Transformation Act. To address this, PSE initiated a Time Varying Rate pilot program and partnered with GridX to better understand how rate design could help achieve goals of reliability and affordability.

By collaborating with GridX and Uplight, PSE implemented a customer education and communication strategy using personalized Rate Education Reports. This solution led to enrollment exceeding targets by 142% to 200% for Time-of-Use rates. The partnership with GridX empowered customers to shift their energy usage, with 94% of participants reporting they took action to reduce consumption during peak periods, and also developed a new approach to support low-income customers.
