Expedia.com slashes flight search latency by 95% with Apache Ignite

Expedia, one of the world’s largest travel sites, was struggling with slow flight search performance as dynamic seat availability and pricing data made its existing Cassandra-based caching layer go stale quickly. After earlier optimization efforts still left search latency above one second, Expedia looked to GridGain’s Apache Ignite-based technology to help achieve sub-second flight search response times.

GridGain helped Expedia embed Apache Ignite into a Java service built with Spring Boot and expose custom REST endpoints for debugging and housekeeping tasks. The result was a major performance gain: flight search latency dropped by 95%, from 3 seconds to 150 milliseconds per search, improving user retention and simplifying IT management of configurations and integrations.
