Ardagh glass pioneer sustainability and flexibility initiatives with GridBeyond’s hybrid battery and DSR technology

Ardagh Group, a leading global supplier of recyclable glass and metal packaging, sought a technology-driven solution to enhance its sustainability initiatives and generate new revenue streams from its energy usage. The company partnered with vendor GridBeyond to implement its hybrid battery and demand side response (DSR) technology, moving beyond their previous experience with other DSR aggregators.

GridBeyond's solution involved a grid-optimizing platform and a Tesla battery, enabling Ardagh to participate in the National Grid’s Firm Frequency Response service. This reduced the plant's reliance on the grid, allowed excess stored energy to be sold back, and decreased the CO₂ impact of energy demand. The results for Ardagh included a reduced carbon footprint, new revenues from grid balancing services, enhanced savings from peak avoidance, and fully financed installation. The project was so successful it won the Best Sustainability Innovation award at the International Beverage Awards.
