Replacements, Ltd., the world’s largest retailer of tableware, silver and estate jewelry, faced a daunting customer-service challenge: matching customer‑submitted photos to the right item in a catalog of 11M+ items and 2M+ patterns, a process that could take curators 3–5 days. To automate and enable self‑service, Replacements, Ltd. engaged Grid Dynamics to deliver a visual search solution using deep learning models and visual search APIs deployed on Google Cloud Platform.

Grid Dynamics designed and trained the models, built the cloud service infrastructure and exposed visual-search APIs so customers can upload a photo and get matches in seconds. The Grid Dynamics implementation returns results in about 2 seconds with ~90% accuracy, shifted most searches to mobile (80%+), reduced manual identification workload, and freed Replacements, Ltd. staff to focus on other business priorities.
