Responsible investing pioneer Australian Ethical leverges GRESB data to screen for sustainability performance

Australian Ethical, a responsible investment manager, leveraged data from GRESB to help screen for and build a portfolio of real estate assets with strong sustainability performance. They needed verifiable external ESG data to align their investments with their ethical charter and to engage with property managers effectively. To achieve this, they utilized GRESB's Real Estate Assessment & Benchmark and Data Exporter service.

Using the GRESB data, Australian Ethical was able to weight specific environmental indicators according to their proprietary framework and benchmark performance against global peers. This solution allowed them to construct a highly sustainable investment portfolio that delivers 77% less CO2 and 13 times more renewable energy use compared to their benchmark. Furthermore, GRESB’s Scorecards provided a foundation for productive engagement with managers, helping to pull the entire industry towards higher ESG standards.
