A Great Expectations Case Study

How Rent the Runway uses GX to make data more accessible and find errors faster

Rent the Runway, the fashion rental company behind “Closet in the Cloud,” needed a better way to ingest and validate CSV and Google Sheets data from partners and internal stakeholders. Its data engineering team was spending too much time dealing with failed uploads, mismatched schemas, incorrect rows, and long manual re-upload cycles before issues were even caught by dbt tests.

Great Expectations (GX) was implemented as the backend for RTR’s CSV upload tool, with downstream data teams creating their own Expectation Suites and using Checkpoints and Data Docs to validate incoming files before they reached the warehouse. Great Expectations made data sources easier to onboard, sped up troubleshooting, and helped the team focus more on analysis and less on ingestion, while still keeping dbt tests for transformation logic.
