Case Study: Spreadable achieves key lessons in product validation and market focus with Grasshopper

A Grasshopper Case Study

Preview of the Spreadable Case Study

Why We Shut Down a Business That Was Making Money & Getting New Customers Every Day

Spreadable, a product from Grasshopper, set out to help small and mid-sized businesses turn happy customers into referral-driven growth. The challenge was that building and selling a word-of-mouth referral tool proved harder than expected: the team faced unclear product-market fit, a confusing early UI, and a sales motion that didn’t match Grasshopper’s core strengths.

Grasshopper ultimately rebuilt and tested Spreadable’s pricing, messaging, and referral widget, learning a great deal from customer interviews and experiments along the way. The referral program itself had shown strong results for Grasshopper’s own business, with conversion rates above 15% and $100K in additional annual revenue, but Spreadable still couldn’t scale efficiently; cost per acquisition and payback were too high, leading Grasshopper to shut it down and reallocate the team to other products.
