Kahuna Multi-Format Switcher Supports Broadcast Station Growth in Southern China

The customer, a broadcaster in southern China known as TVS, faced the challenge of needing to cost-effectively migrate to high-definition television (HDTV) broadcasts while continuing to utilize its massive library of standard definition (SD) legacy content and ensuring full system redundancy to stay on air. To meet this strategic growth objective, they partnered with vendor Grass Valley and selected the Kahuna multiformat production switcher as the core of their upgrade.

The Grass Valley solution centered on the Kahuna switcher's FormatFusion technology, which allows for seamless simultaneous SD and HD operations, eliminating the need for up-conversion. Key features like Shadow Switcher and K-Mirror software provided the critical system redundancy TVS required, ensuring no downtime from equipment failure. As a result, TVS achieved its goals of a secure, multiformat broadcast environment ready for HD, while also optimizing control room space due to the Kahuna’s compact size and low power consumption.
