Case Study: Global Production tests 4K UHD HDR at Alpine Ski World Cup with Grass Valley

A Grass Valley Case Study

Preview of the Global Production Case Study

High Dynamic Range 4K UHD gets full test run at the Alpine Ski World Cup in Italy

Global Production, a mobile production and OB provider, faced the challenge of producing a live 4K UHD HDR broadcast for the Alpine Ski World Cup in the extreme and logistically difficult environment of the Italian Alps, a task that had previously seen mixed results in other sports. Partnering with vendor Grass Valley, they needed to deploy a massive technical setup capable of handling harsh weather, long distances, and complex wiring to deliver a groundbreaking viewing experience.

The solution involved deploying 25 Grass Valley HDR-enabled LDX 86N cameras, supported by a Grass Valley Karrera and Kayenne K-Frame production switcher, to capture the event in stunning 4K UHD HDR. The successful implementation by Grass Valley and Global Production resulted in an incredible picture quality that made viewers feel like they were on the slopes. The high-quality feed was successfully converted to HD SDR for global broadcasters and was also aired in 4K Ultra HD on Eurosport Russia, marking a historic first for the Alpine Ski World Cup and proving the technology's reliability in extreme conditions.
