How Theia Scientific and Volkov Labs use Grafana and AI to analyze scientific images

Theia Scientific, experts in edge computing for scientific instrumentation, faced the challenge of transforming the laborious, repetitive process of digital microscopy analysis into a streamlined, real-time workflow. They needed a widely available solution to enable one-click AI analysis of scientific images with immediate quantification and visualization, overcoming the inconvenience of switching between separate applications during experiments.

To solve this, Theia Scientific teamed up with vendor Grafana, utilizing its platform to create the Theiascope™ application. The solution integrated AI model management and image acquisition directly into Grafana via a custom plugin with five specialized panels, providing a single, customizable interface for users. This Grafana-based application was successfully tested in production environments at major national laboratories and a university, allowing scientists to perform real-time, AI-powered analysis directly at the microscope and significantly improving the user experience.
