How Grillo Uses Grafana to Visualize its Cloud-Based Earthquake Detection

Grillo, a social enterprise startup founded by Andres Meira, is building an affordable cloud-based earthquake detection system for remote and vulnerable regions in Mexico and Chile. To monitor its IoT sensor network and large stream of ground-motion data, Grillo needed a lightweight, scalable way to visualize real-time telemetry and status across its stations.

Using Grafana with InfluxDB and cloud infrastructure, Grillo created office dashboards to inspect sensor data and earthquake activity in real time. Grafana handled the company’s high-volume IoT load of about 60 sensors sending roughly 90 readings per second each, while helping Grillo maintain just 70 milliseconds of latency and improving confidence in the reliability of its alerting system.
