How Grafana Helps PingCAP Troubleshoot TiDB Deployments

PingCAP, the company behind the TiDB HTAP database, was struggling to monitor a rapidly growing cluster environment with hundreds of metrics and massive log volumes. To make sense of this complexity, the team moved from StatsD to Prometheus for metrics collection and used Grafana as the visualization layer for its monitoring data.

With Grafana, PingCAP built intuitive overview dashboards to troubleshoot TiDB deployments faster and reduce reliance on raw logs. The team also used Grafana’s API and plug-in architecture to create custom tools, including a PDF report generator, and leveraged Rows to group key error metrics. Grafana became PingCAP’s first choice for displaying system metrics and helped them diagnose issues more efficiently across clusters.
