How Energinet uses Grafana Enterprise to monitor underwater electricity cables — and solve mysteries

Energinet, Denmark’s national transmission system operator for electricity, needed a better way to monitor underwater power cables, vessel traffic, and high-voltage substations. Its team was struggling with a fragmented toolbox of remote desktops, SCADA views, Excel spreadsheets, and limited reporting options, making it hard to centralize data, analyze faults, and quickly identify whether cable damage came from internal issues or third-party vessels.

To solve this, Energinet adopted Grafana Enterprise, connecting it to SCADA, InfluxDB, AIS vessel data, meteorological data, SAP, and other sources in one centralized platform. With Grafana, the team built dashboards, alerts, geomaps, and trend views that cut query and visualization time from 30 minutes to several hours down to just minutes, improved reporting quality, and helped prevent incidents such as oil cable leaks and potential short circuits. Grafana also helped Energinet identify offending vessels, reduce outage risk, and scale from about 30 users to 120 today, with plans to reach 250–300 users.
