How Cortex helped REWE digital ensure stability while scaling grocery delivery services during the COVID-19 pandemic

REWE digital, the technology arm behind REWE’s e-commerce, app, and grocery delivery services, needed a more scalable monitoring solution as demand surged during COVID-19 and its Kubernetes-based infrastructure and Prometheus setups grew rapidly. As the company expanded, its tribe-based teams were running separate Prometheus and Grafana stacks, and they began seeing memory issues, unpredictable query loads, and operational complexity.

Grafana Labs helped REWE digital implement Cortex for centralized, multi-tenant metrics storage and querying, with Grafana organized as a shared internal service. The migration improved stability, eliminated many Prometheus OOM issues, enabled faster dashboards through query caching, and increased retention from 7 days to 60 days. Grafana Labs’ solution also made it easy to add new clusters and tenants, and to scale reads and writes as usage increased.
