WarmteStad optimises its multi-source heating network with Gradyent's Digital Twin

WarmteStad, a district heating provider for over 6,000 customers in Groningen, faced the challenge of optimizing its increasingly complex multi-source network. The system, powered by heat pumps, a solar thermal field, a seasonal buffer, and gas-fired CHPs, had untapped potential for efficiency. Planning to double its network size, WarmteStad needed a smarter way to control its operations beyond its existing SCADA system.

Gradyent implemented its Digital Twin platform to create a real-time, physics-based model of the entire heating network. This solution provides a single source of truth, allowing WarmteStad to optimize heat dispatch, improve the efficiency of its heat pumps, and adapt to electricity market prices in real-time. The Digital Twin from Gradyent is crucial for minimizing heat losses, reducing costs, future-proofing operations, and supporting the utility's planned expansion.
