Case Study: Virginia Commonwealth University achieves a confident, sustainable facilities plan with Gordian’s facilities assessment and ROPA solutions

A Gordian Case Study

VCU manages $300M in facilities needs with Gordian

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) faced a significant challenge managing its facilities after a period of rapid growth left it with a 44% increase in campus space but disproportionately less funding for staffing and maintenance. This led to a large backlog of facilities needs. VCU partnered with Gordian to assess the scale of these challenges and develop effective strategies using their Sightlines Assessment and Planning solution and ROPA review process.

Gordian's solution identified $300 million in immediate and near-term facilities needs and revealed that operational budgets were 6% below peers. This enabled VCU to create a strategic, forward-focused plan to address the highest-risk needs and confidently secure new capital funding. Gordian also helped VCU redesign staffing plans and compensation packages to attract new hires, mitigating a critical workforce shortage and ensuring sustainable campus operations for the future.
