Indiana Department of Transportation Races to Finish Work Before Indianpolis 500

Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) faced an urgent challenge after a mobile car crusher struck the Rockville Road Bridge over I-465, damaging four load-bearing girders and forcing an immediate closure. With major Indianapolis events approaching, INDOT needed a fast way to restore a critical route into the city’s west side. Gordian’s Job Order Contracting (JOC) approach was used to help accelerate the emergency bridge repair.

Using Gordian’s JOC program and preestablished pricing, INDOT and contractor Rieth-Riley Construction were able to begin demolition and construction the same day, even before the formal purchase order was issued. The bridge reopened in about six weeks instead of the estimated six to eight months a traditional bid process could have taken, helping minimize disruption to motorists and nearby businesses. The $1.3 million project also earned the 2017 Harry H. Mellon Award of Excellence in Job Order Contracting.
