A Gordian Case Study
The Community Colleges of Spokane faced a significant challenge when a planned freeway project was set to take away 10 acres of land, two buildings and nearly 1,000 parking spots from its Spokane Community College campus. To address this space loss without constructing new buildings, District Director of Facilities John Gillette sought data-driven solutions and engaged Gordian's Sightlines service for a space utilization study.
Gordian's solution provided critical data that revealed the institution was primarily a morning campus, allowing for strategic operational changes. The insights enabled the colleges to move towards centralized scheduling and reconsider cleaning and staffing schedules for underutilized buildings. As a direct result of implementing Gordian's data, the colleges identified ample existing space to expand a state program, increasing their capacity to serve more students. Additionally, the data informed utility savings initiatives, such as optimizing trash pick-up schedules, which saves approximately $100,000 annually.
