A Google For Work Maps Case Study
Washington, D.C. sought to improve public safety and emergency response after high-profile incidents exposed aging infrastructure and the limits of static GIS maps. The city needed timely, spatially referenced data and an easy-to-use visualization platform that could be used by analysts, firefighters, police and other responders — not just GIS specialists.
D.C. implemented Google Earth Enterprise and Google Maps API Premier to build “GoogleDC,” an interactive, layered geospatial system that combines 911 calls, license-plate readers, ShotSpotter alerts, hydrant data, camera feeds and 3D building models. The solution broadened access across federal, state and local users, provided real-time situational awareness during major events, enabled rapid data deployment with minimal training, and strengthened intelligence and emergency response capabilities.
