How legislators got the South Carolina State House moving

The South Carolina Hospital Association partnered with Google Fitbit to tackle inactivity and rising obesity risk among staff and legislators at the State House. After a health policy fellows program highlighted the need to shift from weight-focused messaging to empowering everyday movement, SCHA used Google Fitbit’s corporate wellness challenge (Fitbit Health Solutions) to engage participants and kick-start a culture of wellbeing.

Google Fitbit’s program, combined with optional pre- and post-program biometric screenings and a wellness champion in Representative Neal Collins, drove measurable improvements: overweight/obese cases fell by 18%, average daily steps rose 21% from month one to month five with a final-month average of 9,083 steps (top team 10,907), 78% of participants with high cholesterol reduced levels, and a cumulative 31 inches of waist circumference lost. The Google Fitbit-led initiative helped make the State House demonstrably healthier and inspired lasting changes like walking trail markers on the grounds.
