A group of bus drivers revved up their fitness and improved their health

Regional Transit Authority (RTA), a Dayton, OH transit agency with about 650 employees, faced rising healthcare costs and a culture of sedentary work—drivers averaged 52 years old and many carried the so‑called “RTA spread” from long hours sitting. To tackle poor activity levels and mounting medical expenses, RTA partnered with Google Fitbit and introduced Fitbit Health Solutions (trackers and wellness programming) into its corporate wellness efforts.

Google Fitbit launched a 2014 pilot with 100 employees featuring trackers, onsite yoga and fitness classes, and step challenges, then expanded the program company‑wide; as activity increased, average glucose fell by 17 points, LDL by 12 points, and RTA estimates about $2.3M in healthcare cost savings by the end of 2015. The program drove measurable health improvements, higher engagement (including individual weight loss stories), and recognition as a healthier workplace.
