A Google for Education Case Study
Wick High School, a remote secondary school in the Scottish Highlands, faced the challenge of providing flexible and relevant digital skills training to its students. The school's reliance on inflexible, centrally-managed ICT labs limited teachers' ability to innovate and constrained students' hands-on learning with tools like Raspberry Pi devices. Google for Education helped address this by providing a solution that would better equip students with skills attractive to local employers and potentially reverse the trend of young people leaving the area after graduation.
The school adopted Google Workspace for Education and Google Classroom, followed by a 1:1 Chromebook program. This solution gave students and teachers the freedom to learn and work from anywhere, removing the dependency on physical labs. Google for Education's tools enabled innovative, community-relevant projects like the 'Light Bike', empowered teachers to experiment confidently, and helped showcase student talent to local businesses to establish a potential talent pipeline.
