Wake Forest Baptist Health builds cancer trial chatbot in May 2020 with Google for Education

Wake Forest Baptist Health, an academic health system, faced the challenge of matching cancer patients with suitable clinical trials, a process made more difficult by the lack of a single comprehensive source for patients and the strain of the pandemic. To address this, they worked with Google for Education and its product Dialogflow to build an online virtual assistant that could inform users and screen them for eligibility.

The solution implemented by Google for Education, in partnership with Quantiphi, was a chatbot built with Dialogflow that uses machine learning to analyze patient input and provide real-time responses. This tool facilitates enrollment in clinical trials by quickly gathering relevant information from patients and referring them to live advisers. Since its launch, the chatbot has helped the institution more effectively accrue patients for studies, and there are plans to expand the number of cancers covered and add multi-language support to reach more potential patients.
