Using Google’s machine learning tools, UNC team screens for dental disease in young children

The Adams School of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina conducted a major study to understand the factors behind early childhood tooth decay. Their challenge was to analyze a massive dataset with thousands of variables to effectively screen for and predict the disease.

By using Google for Education's Google Cloud and its AutoML Tables product, the team built a custom machine learning model that accurately predicts a child's oral health status. The solution from Google for Education helped develop an easy-to-use web-based screening tool, which won research awards and provides a foundation for the future of precision dentistry and public health analysis.
