University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill launches Heroes Health app in 2 months with Google for Education

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill sought to address the significant mental health challenges faced by its healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The challenge was to systematically assess and support the well-being of frontline staff who were at high risk for anxiety, depression, and PTSD, but lacked a scalable way to do so. Google for Education, using Google Cloud’s healthcare and life sciences solution for Real-World Insights, provided the platform to build a solution.

Google for Education, through volunteer engineering support, helped UNC rapidly develop the Heroes Health app using the Google Cloud-based platform. The solution enabled healthcare workers to self-monitor their mental well-being and access resources. The app was adopted by workers across 48 states and multiple healthcare institutions, leading to hundreds of successful outreach interventions for staff reporting mental health challenges and empowering communities to better care for one another.
