University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill cuts medical image processing from one week to three hours with Google for Education

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill sought to accelerate the high-performance computations required for processing large medical imaging datasets, a task that was taking weeks and hindering research progress. They partnered with Google for Education and utilized Google Cloud along with Techila Technologies' computational engine to address this challenge.

The solution implemented by Google for Education involved using Techila's Distributed Computational Engine on Google Compute Engine, which automatically scaled and distributed the processing work across high-performance virtual machines. This resulted in a dramatic reduction in processing time, from one or two weeks down to just three hours for some tasks. For one specific image reconstruction process, the time was cut from over a month to within eighteen hours, enabling researchers to get quick feedback for optimization and significantly accelerating their time to discovery.
