UNC’s Heroes Health app supports the mental health of COVID-19 healthcare workers

The University of North Carolina System, a major public university, faced the challenge of systematically addressing the severe mental health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its frontline healthcare workers. To understand and support their staff's well-being, they partnered with Google for Education, utilizing Google Cloud’s Real-World Insights solution to build a scalable assessment and support tool.

Google for Education implemented the Heroes Health app, which enables healthcare workers to self-monitor their mental well-being and access resources. The solution allowed the university system to track staff morale trends and intervene to support workers, with hundreds of outreach calls already made. The app has been adopted by numerous other health systems and is used by individual healthcare workers across 48 states, successfully empowering the community to care for its essential workforce.
