Stanford’s School of Medicine reimagines its clinical data warehouse with Google Cloud

Stanford School of Medicine needed a way to reimagine its clinical data warehouse so researchers could securely access and analyze petabyte-scale electronic health record data more efficiently. Working with Google for Education, Stanford built STARR-OMOP, its next-generation analytical clinical data warehouse, and connected it to Google Cloud services including BigQuery.

Using Google Cloud and BigQuery, Stanford expanded compute capacity, enabled secure collaboration, and accelerated cohort analysis with zero operational overhead. The result was major performance gains—queries ran 10 to 100 times faster than on-premise systems—and more than 120 data scientists gained access to STARR-OMOP, helping Stanford support research, training, and near real-time analytics at scale.
