Stanford School of Medicine searches 30 billion medical concepts 10-100x faster with Google for Education

Stanford School of Medicine sought to unlock insights from its massive, petabyte-scale archive of electronic health records. Their challenge was to create a secure, standardized, and easily accessible clinical data warehouse to enable faster data science and push the frontiers of artificial intelligence in medicine. They partnered with Google for Education, leveraging Google Cloud's BigQuery and other services.

Google for Education implemented a solution using Google Cloud's flexible infrastructure, including BigQuery for petabyte-scale data analysis. This resulted in cohort queries running ten to one hundred times faster than on-premise databases. The solution provided a secure, cost-efficient platform that empowered over 120 data scientists, enabled near-real-time analysis of 30 billion medical concepts, and supported the publication of peer-reviewed research.
