NYU-SPS students easily develop AR and VR content with Google 3D modeling tools

NYU School of Professional Studies partnered with Google for Education to help students in its User Experience Design diploma learn the UX side of AR and VR. The challenge was that most students came from mobile, web, product, and project management backgrounds and had little or no 3D modeling experience, making it difficult to teach AR/VR production concepts in a practical way.

Google for Education introduced Google Blocks and Google Poly, along with Google Cardboard, to enable fast, hands-on 3D prototyping. Students learned the tools in under 15 minutes, then used them to build AR/VR projects such as an AR scavenger-hunt app; after three semesters, interest in AR/VR grew from about 10% of students to 90%, and students became more confident requesting AR/VR resources and incorporating emerging technologies into their work.
