North Carolina State University manages 180,000 Google accounts with Google for Education

North Carolina State University faced challenges with its legacy email systems, Cyrus IMAP and GroupWise, which offered limited storage for students and created scheduling conflicts between different calendar programs used by faculty. Staff also encountered barriers to collaboration, struggling with inefficient document sharing and version control. These issues prompted the university to seek a new solution from Google for Education.

The university implemented Google Workspace after a pilot and analysis showed it best met their needs, particularly due to its cross-platform compatibility and integration capabilities. The solution from Google for Education unified the campus on a single platform for email and calendar, significantly improving collaboration and scheduling. The transition was widely embraced, and the university now manages approximately 75,000 active accounts out of 180,000 total, with alumni able to retain their accounts indefinitely.
