National Institute of Health accelerates Parkinson’s research with Google for Education and a 4,298-patient dataset

The National Institute of Health faced the challenge of accelerating Parkinson’s Disease research, which required unprecedented collaboration across institutions and the secure, scalable sharing of large, complex clinical and genomic datasets. Partnering with Google for Education through the NIH STRIDES Initiative, they utilized Google Cloud and the Terra platform to build a unified knowledge base for global researchers.

The solution implemented by Google for Education involved building the AMP PD Knowledge Platform on Google Cloud, using Cloud Storage and BigQuery for data access and Terra for analysis. This enabled researchers worldwide to securely share and query de-identified data from over 4,000 patients. The results were rapid adoption, with nearly 2,000 users in the first two months, and the creation of a unique, longitudinal database that helps identify biomarkers to improve therapies and design better clinical trials.
