Modernizing Islamic Schools with Google for Education

Sekolah Putri Darul Istiqamah (SPIDI), an integrated Islamic boarding school for female students in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, wanted to modernize its education while preserving the discipline and values of pesantren life. To support both religious and secular learning, the school looked for financially efficient technology that could work in a safe, controlled environment; it turned to Google for Education, including Chromebooks, Google Workspace for Education, Chrome Education Upgrade, and ChromeOS Flex.

Google for Education helped SPIDI create an independent digital learning environment with centrally managed Chromebooks, approved app and website access, and extended online access for students until 9 p.m. The school also used Google Workspace for collaborative project-based learning, Google Meet and Google Calendar to support religious and academic activities, and ChromeOS Flex to upgrade about 15% of older PCs and laptops. As a result, SPIDI modernized teaching and learning without losing its Islamic identity and became recognized as one of Indonesia’s three Google Reference Schools.
