Lessons in rolling out 300,000 Chromebooks from Chicago Public Schools

Chicago Public Schools, the third-largest school district in the United States, needed a way to roll out and manage devices at massive scale across 642 schools, 25,000 teachers, and more than 350,000 students. Working with Google for Education, the district focused on using Chromebooks and Google Workspace to support classroom learning while addressing the challenge of decentralized technology decisions and the need to keep devices useful, secure, and easy to manage.

Google for Education helped CPS deploy about 300,000 Chromebooks over several years and centralize control with the Chrome Admin Console and ChromeOS Education Upgrade. The district also launched a “train the trainer” professional development model to expand adoption and classroom impact. As a result, device management became far more efficient, teachers gained more freedom to use apps and extensions, and students and teachers increasingly used Google tools for collaboration, communication, and more engaging instruction.
