Ivy Tech develops machine learning algorithm to identify at-risk students and provide early intervention

Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana wanted to use its large data warehouse more proactively to help students succeed, rather than only analyzing outcomes after the fact. Working with Google for Education, the college used Google Cloud Platform and TensorFlow to begin turning millions of student interaction data points into predictive insights.

Google for Education helped Ivy Tech build an AI-powered system called NewT that analyzes anonymized student engagement data to identify at-risk students early and support intervention. The solution reached 80% accuracy in daily predictions, helped 3,000 students in an early pilot earn a C or better, and has since supported more than 34,712 students, while also enabling the college to scale to 12 million data points and reduce bad grades significantly.
