Georgia State uses Google Cloud Platform to improve disaster recovery

Georgia State University, a large public research university with seven campuses and more than 50,000 students, needed a more reliable disaster recovery strategy for its growing data environment. Its IT team was managing backups across multiple on-premises sites and offsite tape storage, which was costly, manual, and slow to restore. Working with Google for Education, the university used Google Cloud Platform and Cloud Storage, alongside Commvault, to modernize its backup and recovery approach.

Google for Education helped Georgia State implement a hybrid cloud solution that automatically backs up data to Google Cloud Platform, improving security, convenience, and recovery speed. The university cut restore times from hours to minutes and successfully used the system during Hurricane Irma in 2017, quickly bringing systems back online after power outages. The move also reduced reliance on tapes, improved operational efficiency, and supported Georgia State’s broader digital transformation strategy.
