Georgia State University cuts disaster recovery from hours to minutes with Google for Education

Georgia State University, a large teaching and research institution, faced significant challenges in designing a disaster recovery plan for its enormous and ever-growing amount of data. Their previous system of storing data on tapes in off-site centers was expensive, inconvenient, and time-consuming to maintain. To support its digital university initiative, it needed a secure and accessible solution and partnered with Google for Education using Google Cloud Storage.

Google for Education, working with Commvault, implemented a customized hybrid cloud solution to streamline the backup and recovery process. The solution made data accessible, protected, and automated for continuous backup. The results included drastically reduced recovery times, from hours to minutes, which was successfully tested during Hurricane Irma. The university found the Google for Education solution to be cost-effective, secure, and convenient, enabling a quick restoration of systems after prolonged power outages.
