Creating an “accessibility for all” culture in classrooms through technology

Aberdeen City Council worked with Google for Education to make accessibility a standard part of learning rather than an add-on. The council wanted to avoid singling out pupils with additional support needs and instead provide tools that every student could use across its schools, including Chromebooks and Chrome-based accessibility features.

Google for Education helped Aberdeen City Council roll out Read&Write from Texthelp to Chrome for 20,000 students, alongside built-in Chromebook tools like dictation and on-screen keyboard support. The district also created a strong training program for teachers, pupils, and parents. As a result, students gained confidence in reading and writing, classmates helped one another use the tools, and Aberdeen City Council won an “Accessibility for All” award in 2018.
