A Google for Education Case Study
Clemson University, a public research university, needed to analyze massive amounts of traffic camera data to improve emergency evacuation planning but lacked the on-demand, high-performance computing resources required for such a large-scale task. They turned to Google for Education and leveraged Google Cloud to process this data efficiently and at a moment's notice.
Using Google Cloud, the Clemson team deployed a record-breaking 2.1 million virtual CPUs in parallel to process 210 TB of video data. This solution, which utilized cost-effective preemptible VMs, completed the processing in under eight hours at a lower average cost than many on-premise HPC systems. The experiment proved that Google Cloud could provide the instant scalability needed for real-time disaster management simulations, democratizing access to supercomputing-level power for public safety applications.
