City College of New York students get hands-on experience with the cloud

The City College of New York (CCNY) wanted to give computer science students practical experience with cloud technologies like virtualization and containers, but lacked the resources to build new infrastructure. Google for Education, using Google Cloud Platform, helped the college bring modern cloud tools into the classroom so students could learn technologies not covered well in traditional textbooks.

With Google for Education and Google Cloud Platform, CCNY students used tutorials, virtual machines, containers, Kubernetes, MySQL, and other cloud tools to build applications and complete hands-on projects. The result was a more real-world computer science education, with students gaining practical experience on scalable cloud infrastructure at low cost; several students even went beyond requirements to build their own applications, and senior teams are using the platform for AI and machine-learning projects with grants of GCP time supporting development and testing.
