At Arizona State University, students design an app to help travelers on a budget

Arizona State University students created OdySearch, an app to help travelers find affordable trips with more flexibility than traditional flight search tools. Using Google for Education products including Compute Engine, Cloud SQL, and App Engine, the team set out to solve the challenge of manually searching for budget flights, especially for students with limited travel budgets.

Google for Education supported the solution by giving the team scalable cloud infrastructure to run a greedy algorithm against large flight datasets and power a mobile app built with Flutter. The result was a working prototype capable of finding complex itineraries, including trips with more than four stops and trans-Atlantic round-trips under $850, while also enabling the team to design a backend that can scale to multiple users.
