Case Study: Wondermall achieves 10× faster development and real-time analytics with Google Cloud Platform

A Google Cloud Platform Case Study

Wondermall stays flexible and innovates fast using App Engine, Compute Engine and BigQuery

Wondermall is a Silicon Valley iPad mall app founded in 2012 that aggregates products from over 200 retailers (including Macy’s, Gap and Forever21) so users can compare items and prices. The company needed a scalable, robust and “DevOps-less” cloud infrastructure that would handle load balancing, auto-scaling and databases while letting the team use open-source tools like ElasticSearch and Chef and perform large-scale data analysis.

Wondermall built on Google Cloud—using App Engine for rapid development and auto-scaling, Compute Engine to run ElasticSearch clusters, and BigQuery to ingest thousands of records per second and analyze terabytes of data. The result: a 10x faster development cycle, queries that run in seconds instead of hours, and the ability to focus on product and user experience without managing servers, backups or scaling.
