A Google Cloud Platform Case Study
Volusion, an Austin-based e-commerce platform that has processed over $29 billion in merchant sales and hosts about 30,000 storefronts, needed to give small and mid-size merchants a faster, more secure, and more scalable hosted shopping-cart solution without requiring them to manage infrastructure. To support growth and legacy Windows workloads while lowering costs and improving availability, Volusion set out to modernize its operations and customer experience.
Working with Google Cloud Professional Services, Volusion moved employees to G Suite and migrated its storefronts to Google Cloud Platform using a lift-and-shift to Compute Engine and Cloud Storage, plus tools like Stackdriver, BigQuery, and Data Studio. The move cut average time-to-first-byte by 65%, boosted conversions and merchant revenue (one $100K/day merchant saw an extra $7K/day), improved security and PCI compliance, enabled near-instant scaling for peak seasons, and is projected to reduce data-center costs by about 40% by year three.
