A Google Cloud Platform Case Study
Ubisoft set out to create a web-based version of its console game "From Dust" for Google Chrome. The Montpellier team had limited web-development experience and needed an easy-to-learn, low-maintenance platform that could scale to support a fast-growing player base without adding server staff.
They built the Chrome version in two months using Google App Engine and Google Cloud Storage—leveraging App Engine’s Datastore, Users API and admin console plus Chrome’s Native Client—to store profiles, authenticate users, monitor performance and serve game data. The result was effortless scaling (users jumped from about 11,000 to 100,000 in days), consistently high worldwide performance, and no need to hire additional operations staff.
