Case Study: Via enables tens of thousands to share rides daily with Google Cloud Platform (Google Maps Platform)

A Google Cloud Platform Case Study

Preview of the Via Case Study

Via helping tens of thousands of people share rides every day

Via Transportation is a New York–based real-time ridesharing company that sought to offer low-cost, app-based shared rides by matching multiple passengers traveling along similar routes. To deliver a point-to-point (corner-to-corner) service rather than door-to-door trips and scale quickly into new cities, Via needed reliable routing, pickup coordination, and a smooth user experience.

Working with Thermopylae (T-Sciences) and Google Maps Platform, Via uses the Distance Matrix API for travel time and distance, the Places and Geocoding APIs for correct corner pickups, and the Maps JavaScript API in its backend to track vehicles. The result is millions of riders paying low, flat fees and tens of thousands sharing rides daily, faster city rollouts, more accurate scheduling, and reduced pickup and trip times—technology Via now licenses to international transit partners.
