The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources needed a better way to work with more than 20 years of wildlife tracking data stored in an outdated on-premise warehouse. Querying had become nearly impossible as the dataset grew, making it hard for scientists to quickly access the information they needed to support conservation and management decisions. Looker was part of the broader data modernization effort supporting their Wildlife Tracker initiative.

Using Looker with Google Cloud’s BigQuery and GPS collar data, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources centralized and scaled access to millions of location records, turning hours of manual work into instant searches. The new approach gave researchers real-time visibility into more than 3,000 tracked animals, reduced animal-location lookup time from up to half a day to an instant GPS search, and enabled faster, more informed wildlife conservation decisions.
