Case Study: UNITEC achieves a fast, seamless legacy migration with Google Cloud Platform

UNITEC Modernizes SPARC servers by migrating Solaris apps to Charon-SSP on Google Cloud in 24 days

UNITEC, part of Laureate International Universities and serving more than 90,000 students across Mexico, wanted to modernize its IT infrastructure and exit its data center. The university faced a time-sensitive challenge migrating mission-critical Solaris applications running on proprietary SPARC systems, along with servers and data, to Google Cloud Platform without disrupting performance or the end-user experience.

Google Cloud Platform recommended using Google Cloud VMware Engine and partner Stromasys’ Charon-SSP emulation to lift and shift the legacy workloads to cloud-based x86 infrastructure with no changes to the applications or operating systems. The migration moved eight SPARC servers, 22 zones, and 25 TB of data in 24 days, delivering scalable capacity on demand, optimized costs, and zero negative impact on application performance.
